2014-12-25 | Singer Joe Cocker Dies At 70 | Blues and rock legend Joe Cocker, best known for his gritty voice and great vocals, has died at the age of 70.
The English-born singer-songwriter died on Sunday (December 21) in Colorado, where he has lived for the past two decades. He had lung cancer.
His death was confirmed by agent Barrie Marshall, who called Cocker "without doubt the greatest rock-soul voice ever to come out of Britain".
Cocker, from Sheffield, had a career spanning decades and recorded some 40 albums, his raspy voice known to and loved by generations of blues lovers.
His cover of the Beatles' song "With A Little Help From My Friends" reached number one in the UK in 1968, and a year later he performed the song at Woodstock.
Other hits included "You Are So Beautiful" and "Up Where We Belong", a 1983 duet with Jennifer Warnes that earned him a Grammy and an Oscar. The song was featured in the Richard Gere film "An Officer And A Gentleman".
"You Can Leave Your Hat On" was featured in the 1986 film "9 1/2 Weeks".
Mr. Marshall said in his statement that Cocker was "simply unique".
"Hugely talented - a true star - but a kind and humble man who loved to perform," Mr. Marshall added in a statement.
"Anyone who ever saw him live will never forget him."
Cocker embarked on the epic "Mad Dogs And Englishmen'" Tour in 1970, featuring more than 40 musicians and almost 50 cities across America.
In 2011 he received an OBE for his contribution to music.
Tributes started pouring in shortly after news of Cocker's death came out.
Former Beatles, Sir Paul McCartney called Cocker a "lovely northern lad who I loved a lot and, like many people, I loved his singing".
Of the "With A Little Help From My Friends" cover, he said Cocker had "totally turned the song into a soul anthem and I was forever grateful for him for doing that".
Beatles drummer Ringo Starr paid tribute to his friend: "Goodbye and God bless to Joe Cocker from one of his friends, peace and love."
"Joe Cocker is a legendary artist of rock and blues history and yet he was one of the most humble men I've ever met," said Edgar Berger, chairman and chief executive of Sony Music Entertainment International.
"His iconic voice will forever be etched in our memories."
Aerosmith singer Steve Tyler said: "We loved you forever, we will miss you always. RIP Joe Cocker."

2010-07-20 | Perry determined to get back on tour | Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton has confirmed guitarist Joe Perry will join the band on its U.S. tour later this month, just days after he was injured in a motorcycle accident.
Perry sustained unknown injuries after his motorcycle was struck by a car at traffic lights in Taunton, Massachusetts on Thursday.
The rocker, 59, was taken by ambulance to the nearby Morton Hospital and Medical Center where he was treated and released.
But Hamilton insists the band's previously announced U.S. tour, which is scheduled to begin on 23 July in Oakland, California, will go on as planned - and Perry is expected to take the stage.
In an interview with Boston's Fox 25 News radio programme on Friday, Hamilton said: "He's doing good. He's a bit sore today, but he's well, and we're looking forward to heading out to the West Coast (on) Wednesday to start doing some touring in the States."
Perry has suffered from knee pain for years and had a total knee replacement operation in 2008.
The driver who allegedly struck Perry, 62-year-old Linda O'Brien, has been cited for following a vehicle too closely. Source: Ananova |
2009-08-07 | Aerosmith: Singer Breaks Shoulder In Stage Mishap | According to a Twitter message sent by Billie Perry, the wife of Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, the band's singer, Steven Tyler, broke received stitches in his head and back following Wednesday's fall off the stage during a concert in South Dakota.
Tyler, 61, also broke his shoulder during the mishap, which occurred on the veteran rock band's ill-starred summer tour, an insider told Reuters on Thursday.
"Yes he is very sore," Billie Perry wrote, adding that there was no word yet on when the tour would resume.

2009-08-05 | KISS: New Album Rumors | KISS' much-anticipated new album is rumored to be entitled "Sonic Boom". The editor of Guitar Player magazine, who had a chance to preview five songs off the LP last week, wrote on Facebook that this was the title "they had on the studio TV monitors while they were playing the audio files." In addition, an update on MelodicRock.com's Twitter account states that the effort, which has a tentative release date of October 6, will be issued as a triple-disc set through Wal-Mart featuring the new album, a CD of re-recorded KISS hits (which was recently released in Japan), and a DVD. However, it should be noted that none of this information has yet been corroborated by an official source and should be treated as a rumor only.
The editor of Guitar Player magazine wrote about the new KISS material, "Paul [Stanley, KISS guitarist/vocalist] sings his ass off. Eric [Singer] plays some amazingly powerful drums. Gene [Simmons] was finally made to play all of his bass parts (apparently, in the past, if someone had a cool bass idea, he let them play it), and he DOES have a pretty driving sound. Finally, Paul and Tommy's [Thayer] guitars sound HUGE — with some fab riffs and '70s-style solos."
Songtitles set to appear on the new KISS CD include "Russian Roulette", "Modern Day Delilah" and "Stand".
Thayer wrote and sang his first song on the album, while Singer also got his first opportunity to sing a lead vocal on an original song.
Simmons recently told The Canadian Press that there were no outside writers working on the Paul Stanley-produced disc. He also described the album's sound as "no strings, no keyboards, no synths, no tambourines, no nothing — just meat and potatoes."
Simmons confirmed during a recent radio appearance that a deal is in the works with Wal-Mart that will result in an "entire section" of the giant retailer's stores across the country (apparently dubbed "Kiss Korner") being dedicated to KISS.
There has been no official announcement of a KISS deal with Wal-Mart for the band's next CD, although artists such as The Eagles and AC/DC have both issued recent albums exclusively through the giant retailer. In addition, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry may have inadvertently let it slip that the band's next studio album will come out exclusively through Wal-Mart. Source: DarkSide.ru |
2009-08-05 | Aerosmith: Guitarist To Release "Have Guitar Will Travel" In November | Dean Goodman of Reuters reports that Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry has set "Joe Perry … Have Guitar Will Travel" as the title of his fifth solo CD, tentatively due in November. Perry sings on four of the tracks on the album, which follows a self-titled, Grammy-nominated effort that came out in 2005 and sold 31,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Five of the tracks are sung by a relatively unknown German musician, Hagen, who was discovered by Perry's wife, Billie, on YouTube. Source: DarkSide.ru |
