Misfits Finally Name a Drummer For Their Upcoming Reunion Gigs
Back when the Misfits announced the live return of their “original” lineup, the horror punks wouldn’t name the drummer they had in tow. Now, just days ahead of their Sept. 4 Denver Riot Fest gig, the Misfits have revealed the identity of the man teased as Glenn Danzig’s “favorite drummer.”
It’s Dave Lombardo, and he’s a good one. Lombardo is a founding member of Slayer (with whom he’s played as recently as 2013) who has also drummed with bands like Testament and Suicidal Tendencies. Breaking the news to Rolling Stone, all parties shouted out the the interlocking lineages of the Misfits and metal. "The Misfits created the horror punk attitude and had a massive influence on modern rock, punk and metal," Lombardo said. Bassist Jerry Only added, “I think the darker side of punk we created with the Misfits spawned the growth and evolution of punk into thrash, and sired bands like Metallica and Slayer, just as we inspired countless others in the punk revolution.”
So yeah, the historical side check out.
For now, the retooled Misfits (also featuring guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein) have only two dates planned: Sept. 4 in Denver and Sept. 18 at Riot Fest’s Chicago stop. In recent interviews, they’ve left the door open to future projects, though this figures to hinge on how these shows go.
The two planned gigs are Danzig’s first with the Misfits since 1983. He was engaged in frequent legal disputes with Only in the years that followed, though they’ve since buried the hatchet. When they did play together, their onstage chemistry was often... volatile. How they do next month remains to be seen, but with Lombardo behind the kit, we’re essentially assured one quarter of the Misfits will be completely on point.

Ulrich Says More "Big Four" Shows Could Happen In 2011 Or 2012
Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has told U.K.'s Classic Rock magazine that further "Big Four" shows — featuring Metallica along with Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax - could happen in 2011 or 2012.
"The vibe on this thing the "Big Four" tour is so big, we'd be stupid to ignore it," Ulrich said. "You know on your iPhone, you can move the weather maps up and down? Well, the "Big Four" is quickly moving up to the top in terms of potential occurrences for the next couple of years."
But foremost in Ulrich's mind at the moment is enjoying some well-earned time off.
"We started in May 2008, so we've got to go and lie down pretty soon!" he said. "We've got three runs out in Australia, Japan and New Zealand in the Fall, then we're going to take a little bit of a breather because at that point we will have been two-and-a-half years on the road.
"So I would champion trying to do this the "Big Four" tour in 2011 or 2012, obviously in England and the United States. It's just a matter of logistics. I don't think there's anybody involved who considers there's a sell-by date on this.
"But here's the stuff: on November 20th my ass is going home. I'm going to sit at home, and I know the other fellas in the band are gong to do the same thing. I would say we're going to take at least six months off and do nothing, and then at some point in the spring or summer of 2011 we'll start to figure out what to do next." Source: DarkSide.ru

Monkeys Are Metallica Fans, Scientists Say
Monkeys have been found to be fans of heavy metal music after scientists in America found it calmed them down.
When a group of cottontop tamarins were played a variety of tunes, from classical to jazz, only songs by thrash metal outfit Metallica made them react.
But rather than making them agitated or aggressive, the heavy tracks had a soothing effect, Psychology Professor Charles Snowdon, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, found.
Dr Snowdon, who teamed up with National Symphony Orchestra cellist David Teie, also played the monkeys tunes composed specifically for them.
Although they enjoyed Metallica, they were much more interested in these pieces.
A melody based on the short calls of scared monkeys led to anxiety levels soaring, while one based on long calls the creatures make when they are happy had a calming effect.
The pair also found monkeys use tone and pitch to express emotions.
Dr Snowdon told the Royal Society Journal Biology Letters: "My talking does not necessarily tell you about my emotional state.
"When I add extra elements, change the tone of voice, the rhythm, pitch or speed, that is where the emotional content is contained.
"Monkeys interpret rising and falling tones differently than humans. Oddly, their only response to several samples of human music was a calming response to the heavy-metal band Metallica."
He said human babies are also able to interpret tone and pitch.
"We use legato - long tones - with babies to calm them. We use staccato to order them to stop," he said.
"Approval has a rising tone, and soothing has a decreasing tone. We add musical features to speech so it will influence the affective state of a baby. If you bark out 'PLAY WITH IT' a baby will freeze."Metallica Source: Ananova

Dark Funeral: New Album Title Announced
Swedish black metalers Dark Funeral have set "Angelus Exuro pro Eternus" as the title of their new album, tentatively due on November 18. Guitarist Lord Ahriman states, "Peter Tägtgren [Hypocrisy, Pain] is currently mixing our new album at his Abyss Studios [in Pärlby, outside Ludvika, Sweden]. Once we have approved the final mix, Jonas Kjellgren [Scar Symmetry] will be mastering it."
He adds, "By listening to the rough mix, the final production will kill totally, no doubt! Can't wait to blast the final result in the stereo!
"We decided to go for a bit rawer sound this time, and not as crystal clear and perhaps polished as our last album ('Attera Totus Sanctus'), but no worries. The production still holds the high quality that you would come to expect from us. We haven't done "a Metallica", so to say!"
Dark Funeral shot a video for one of the new tracks, "My Funeral", over the August 21-23 weekend at the Abyss Studios. Lord Ahriman says, "The video was shot in and outside an old and closed mental hospital. The environment was just killer. And besides, it suited the video theme perfect!
"The video is currently under editing by Standard Film Team. And within the next two-three weeks it should be ready for world premiere. However, due to the graphic violence and somewhat gory nature of the video, I would assume that we will be forced to edit two versions, one soft and one hard core version. Exactly how and where we'll release them is yet to be decided though." Source: DarkSide.ru

Limp Bizkit Off-Stage
Limp Bizkit were pelted with rubbish and greeted by chants of "f*ck Fred Durst" at a show in Chicago on Saturday, prompting the flagging nu-metal icons to flee the stage.
The news comes as Durst confirmed that the band's new album is finally "done", and is now set for release in either September or October.
According to reports, the drama at this weekend's Summer Sanitorium performance unfolded after hours of ill-feeling from the 40,000 crowd towards Limp Bizkit.
The band were booed throughout the day, each time their name was mentioned from the stage, with a string of 'Fred Sucks' banners littering the crowd at the Hawthorne Racecourse, claim reports from local Chicago newspapers.
When the group eventually emerged, one down from headliners Metallica, Durst was pelted with bottles, money and other objects and greeted by a hail of abusive chants.
Durst responded by crouching on the ground and returned verbal fire by calling the crowd "f*cking pussies" and cursing the city, alongside a string of anti-gay remarks. He also challenged the crowd to a fight.
A writer for the Chicago Sun-Times described Durst's reaction: "His first response was like, 'Bring it on'. It was that thing of, 'We're Limp Bizkit and we love it when you hate us'.
"But then he started getting frustrated and saying things like, 'This is why your baseball teams suck. None of you are good pitchers. You can't hit me with your garbage'".
Six songs into their set, which was due to last an hour, the band walked off-stage, although Durst continued to abuse the crowd from backstage, insisting that Limp Bizkit are "the greatest band in the world".
Meanwhile, in an online posting on the band's website, Durst claimed that their new album, featuring Mike Scott, Wes Borland's replacement on guitar, is complete.
He said: "There's 18 songs and I'd like to get them all on there. There are many ups and downs. The saddest song is called 'Drown'. It's about realising it's getting close to the end."
