2010-08-02Alicia Keys marries
Parents-to-be Alicia Keys and rap producer Swizz Beatz have married in a ceremony in Corsica, France. The "No One" hitmaker, who is pregnant with the couple's first child, walked down the aisle on Saturday in front of family, friends and A-list stars including U2 rocker Bono and Queen Latifah. Keys looked radiant in a flowing white gown and headband, while the groom wore a white tuxedo jacket, pink shirt and bow tie for their big day. The nuptials on the Mediterranean island proved to be a relaxed affair - Keys showed off her baby bump in a bikini while enjoying a dip in the pool before exchanging vows. The singer announced her pregnancy and engagement to Beatz in May and their first child is due later this year.

2010-07-26U2 force football game change
Irish rockers U2 have forced executives at Italian football club Juventus to move an upcoming game after the stadium was double-booked. The band will make its comeback at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin, Italy on 6 August, after Bono's back injury forced the group to scrap a series of shows, including a headline slot at Glastonbury festival last month. U2 will spend the next two weeks at the venue rehearsing for their live return, but bosses at the football club have been left rearranging their calendar after realising the band's gig had been booked for the same day as Juventus' Europa League clash with Irish side Shamrock Rovers. The football match has now been moved to a different venue in Modena, Italy, while the U2 gig will go ahead as planned at the Stadio Olimpico. Shamrock Rovers chairman Jonathan Roche tells the Irish Times, "Apparently U2 have the stadium booked as part of their European tour so the venue is being moved to Modena."

2010-05-25U2 axe tour and Glastonbury
Irish rocker Bono is "heartbroken" after U2 were forced to postpone their entire North American tour and cancel their appearance at legendary music festival Glastonbury following his emergency back surgery. The 50-year-old singer was admitted to a specialist neurosurgery unit at a hospital in Germany on Friday after suffering "severe pain" and "partial paralysis" during rehearsals for their 360 Degree world tour in Munich. Bono underwent an operation immediately and neurosurgeon Joerg Tonn, who treated the star, is convinced he will make a full recovery - but will need at least two months rest. Dr. Tonn says, "He was already in severe pain with partial paralysis of the lower leg. The surgery was the only course of treatment for full recovery and to avoid further paralysis. Bono is now much better with complete recovery of his motor-deficit. His prognosis is excellent but to obtain a sustainable result he must now enter a period of rehabilitation." The band has now postponed all their gigs in the U.S. and Canada, which were scheduled for June and July, and they are working with promoters to reschedule the dates. They have also been forced to cancel their prestigious headlining appearance at Glastonbury on 25 June, and Bono admits he is devastated to let his fans down. He says, "I'm heartbroken. We really wanted to be there to do something really special." U2's manager, Paul McGuinness, adds, "Our biggest and I believe best tour has been interrupted and we're all devastated. For a performer who lives to be on stage, this is more than a blow. "He feels robbed of the chance to do what he does best and feels like he has badly let down the band and their audience. Which is of course nonsense. His concerns about more than a million ticket buyers whose plans have been turned upside down, we all share, but the most important thing right now is that Bono make (sic) a full recovery. We're working as fast as we can with Live Nation to reschedule these dates."

2010-05-25U2 replaced by Coldplay at Glastonbury?
Rockers Coldplay have reportedly been approached to take over U2's headlining slot at the famed Glastonbury festival - after frontman Bono underwent emergency spinal surgery on Friday. Organisers of the leading music festival are rushing to find a possible replacement for the Beautiful Day hitmakers after Bono injured his back while preparing for the band's 360 Degree world tour. Chris Martin and his bandmates are currently working on their next album after wrapping up their Viva La Vida trek - but are said to be considering Glastonbury boss Michael Eavis' offer to play the festival next month. London rapper Dizzee Rascal is also believed to be in consideration for the slot on 25 June, according to The Sun. Bono, 50, is said to be recuperating under the care of a sports injury specialist and a neurosurgeon. U2 have scrapped the first show of their North American tour and are expected to make further cancellations due to Bono's back problems.

2008-04-24U2's serious new album
U2 are "getting serious" with work on their new album. The Irish rockers haven't released an album since 2004's How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, which went triple platinum. They've been recording in their Dublin studio for some time but now, according to guitarist The Edge, the band have only just got serious about it. Talking to Associated Press The Edge, real-name David Howell Evans, said: "We went into this project allowing ourselves the indulgence of making music without think about where it was going to end up, we're starting to get serious now." U2's thirteenth album is expected to be released in October 2008, but an engineering source in Dublin told Orange that U2 frontman Bono has considered recording a double album, a move that would push the release date back.

2007-12-03U2 talk new album
U2 have revealed that their new album will have a range of influences including Morocco, trance and metal. Speaking to The Independent, Bono explained that "fans will feel the difference" on the new material the band have been penning. "The two great catalysts of U2's recording life, (producers) Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, joined us (in Morocco). It was an inspiring experience and a drummer's paradise." However, don't expect a world music album from the Irish band as Bono added: "There's some trance influences. But there's some very hardcore guitar coming out of The Edge. Real molten metal. It's not like anything we've ever done before... "

2007-10-01Spice Girls hire Bono
The Spice Girls and U2's Bono are set to collaborate on a new song. Looking for a little something extra to add to the upcoming greatest hits album, the old Spices have asked Bono to pen them a new tune. An insider told the Daily Mirror: "It might seem unusual with the Spice Girls' pop roots and the much more rockier work of Bono, but it works. "There's been a bit of unease as to how the album will perform and if there's still a solid Spice Girls' fanbase out there." According to the source, Bono's track has changed all that. They add: "Bono's involvement has lifted the whole camp and he's delighted to have been asked and add his experience."

Bono has revealed what kind of music he wants played at his funeral. The U2 singer says he wants the music to be supplied by Bob Dylan and Pavarotti reports NME.com. He describes the funeral in a new book, Bono In Conversation, due to be published in April. He said:"I would like lots of weeping and wailing. The music would have to be good. Bob Dylan singing Death Is Not The End. I think I'll have Pavarotti singing La Traviata." In the book, written with interviewer Michka Assayas, he also reveals private conversations with the likes of Tony Blair, George Bush and Bill Clinton. U2 's 2005 world tour kicks off in San Diego on March 28. The British leg opens in Manchester on June 14.

2005-01-04U2 to team up with Pavarotti
U2 are to record with tenor Luciano Pavarotti again. Despite their different styles the two acts collaborated in 1996 when U2, going under the name Passengers, recorded Miss Sarajevo with Pavarotti. The next collaboration came when Bono accompanied the tenor for a rendition of Ave Maria for the Pavarotti and Friends concert in Italy in 2003. Now the band are going to work with him again to record the same song as a B-side for their next single, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own reports Digitalspy. The single will also feature a Trent Reznor remix of the band's recent single Vertigo.

2004-12-06Bono slams 'whingeing rock stars'
Bono has slammed "whingeing rock stars" who complain about their fame and fans. The U2 frontman says he has no time for pampered musicians who moan about their life. Instead, the singer insists they should be grateful to their fans who have paid for their lavish lifestyles reports Femalefirst.co.uk quoting The Sun. He said: "I do hate whingeing rock stars. The life that people have given us is amazing. We don't have the same worries other people do, like how to pay the bills. In return we only have to do one thing. The deal is, don't be crap - that's all anyone's asked of us." However, Bono has nothing but admiration for rock star friends Robbie Williams and Chris Martin of Coldplay. The iconic singer praised Martin - who he recently worked with on the Band Aid 20 record Do They Know It's Christmas? - for his charity work with Oxfam, and says he thinks Robbie is grossly misunderstood as an artist. He added: "I love Robbie. I think he has a poetic nature and a pop nature - two sides to him and it's amazing what Chris is doing. He's not just in a brilliant band, there is a moral compass there."

2004-11-17Band Aid single can be downloaded
The Band Aid 20 single will be released as a downloadable ringtone. Orange is allowing its customers to download the tune and are donating proceeds to the Band Aid Trust. The ringtone will launch a week ahead of the single on 22nd November. The song features Dido, U2, The Darkness, Rachel Stevens and Will Young and was recorded at Air Studios in London on Sunday. Director of Orange Multimedia Operations Mark Hird said: "We would like to encourage our customers to really get behind Band Aid by downloading the ringtone to their phones; the more customers who download the ringtone from Orange, the more we can donate to help the Band Aid Trust; its as simple as that."

2004-11-16Bono didn't feel worthy to sing Band Aid line
Bono has confessed he did not feel worthy enough to sing his immortal Band Aid line. The U2 frontman - who sang "Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you" on the original song 20 years ago - thought the line too poignant for him to repeat. But the star agreed after Travis frontman Fran Healy - who plays guitar on the track - and producer Nigel Godrich begged him to do it. There had been talk that Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins would take it on reports The Sun. Executive producer Midge Ure said: "We felt the Justin line may have been too comical." Bono said: "I sang the whole song just to remind myself why we were all there. But they were after one line. And it's a line I really, really wasn't comfortable with. "I didn't like singing it in the first place and I wasn't keen on singing it again - it's such a big line. But Fran and Nigel said, 'You have to sing this line.' I agreed to it. It's important." The single will be released on November 29.

2004-11-11Bono determined to keep his Band Aid line
Bono has reportedly had to get tough with his Band Aid 20 co-stars - to stop them stealing his famous line. Robbie Williams admits he was desperate to get "And tonight thank God it's them, instead of you," which Bono sang on the original of Do They Know It's Christmas? Other top singers like Justin Hawkins from The Darkness, Coldplay's Chris Martin and Fran Healy from Travis were all keen to sing the line too. In the end U2 frontman Bono had to put his foot down and insist that he sang it reports The Sun. Robbie said: "Everyone wanted it. But before anyone could start getting an ego about it, Bono just said, 'That's my line and I'm doing it - so their rest of you can f*** off.' That settled it!" Robbie is unable to make the live recording this Sunday as he is flying to Mexico. But he has already recorded the entire song in Los Angeles, and producer Nigel Godrich will select the line he wants Robbie to have. The former Take That star also revealed how he hopes Live Aid makes a comeback next year. Robbie said: "It would be great. I don't know what I'd sing though. I think everyone would want Angels." The recording of Band Aid will take place on Sunday at Air Studios in London. Lemar has now been added to the bill.

2004-09-27Home start for U2's European tour
U2 will begin their European tour with two hometown concerts in Dublin at the city's Croke Park on June 26 and 27, according to reports in Ireland. The band may add a third show on June 28 if there is the demand for it, according to Ireland's Sunday Business Post. Up to 80,000 tickets will be sold for each gig. U2 previously played the venue twice in 1986 in front of a total of 120,000 fans and performed there at the opening of last year's Special Olympics. U2 release their first album for four years, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, on November 22 preceded by the single, Vertigo, on November 8.

2004-08-09Bono says he could have been a speech writer
Bono says if he wasn't a rock star he probably would have made a living as a speech writer for causes he believes in. And he admits that he doesn't think some of his lyrics are very good. The 44-year-old U2 frontman told the Los Angeles Times that when he now listens to Bad which the band sung at Live Aid in 1985 he isn't impressed with the lyrics and doesn't think their 1987 hit Where The Streets Have No Name rhymes very well. He says, "When I look at our first 10 years, I just hear unfinished work, lyrics we never finished because we ran out of studio time. I hear Bad and see what's not there. I just see a list of failures." But, Bono says the band manage to capture a "spirit" rather than aim for craftsmanship in their songwriting. "Feelings are stronger than ideas or words in a song. You can have 1,000 ideas, but unless you capture an emotion, it's an essay. "I'm always writing speeches or articles for causes I believe in. That's probably what I would have done if I wasn't in music, but that's not songwriting," he said. Bono says the opening couplet to Where The Streets Have No Name "is one of the most banal couplets I've ever heard," but says that when the band play the song live it becomes "something else." Talking about the band's songwriting process where all four members contribute and are given a royalty credit, Bono says U2 are more like "Miles Davis than The Beatles" where John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote most of the songs. U2 are due to release a new album in November, the band's first album since 2000's All That You Can't Leave Behind.

2004-07-26U2 will rush release album if it's leaked
Bono says U2 will release their new album early if it's leaked onto the internet. A CD containing new songs from the album went missing during a recent photo session in Nice. Bono said that they'd be willing to release the record early, rather than face an online leak four months before release. He said: "If it is on the internet this week, we will release it immediately as a legal download on iTunes, and get hard copies into the shops by the end of the month. "It would be a real pity. It would screw up years of work and months of planning, not to mention f**king up our holidays. But once it's out, it's out." The CD that was stolen belonged to guitarist The Edge, who said that it "doesn't seem credible" that it could have been taken. Band manager Paul McGuiness added: "The recording of this album has been going so well. The band is so excited about its release. It would be a shame if unfinished work fell into the wrong hands." The band have been working on the follow-up to All That You Can't Leave Behind for much of the year. The album, said to have the working title of Vertigo, isn't due until the autumn.

2004-07-16Rough copy of U2's new album goes missing
A rough copy of U2's new album has gone missing during a photo-shoot in the South of France. Lead singer Bono fears the copy of Vertigo will end up on the internet where it could be downloaded illegally. That could cost the band millions, says The Sun. The band were being photographed for the cover of the new album when they realised the CD had gone missing. Police were immediately called to the Victorine Studios in Nice where they questioned make-up artists and photographers. U2's manager and record company have voiced their concerns over the album - although they stressed it isn't the final edited version. Manager Paul McGuinness said: "The band is so excited about the release of this album. It would be a shame if an unfinished work fell into the wrong hands." Bono has described the new album as "a monster - filled with big tunes".

2004-06-23Eavis wants U2 and Prince for Glasto 2005
Michael Eavis says he wants U2 and Prince to headline next year's Glastonbury Festival. "I'd like to get U2 headlining for next year and I'll be making a phone call to them," Eavis told Virtual Festivals. "I know they like to do their own thing but, then again, so does Paul McCartney, and they don't come much bigger than him." And he added: "I might also try Prince again. We approached him for this year and he seemed interested but in the end he couldn't make it." This year's Glastonbury Festival begins on Friday, June 25. Gates open tomorrow, Wednesday, June 23.

2003-07-29Robbie Williams tells of fighting off fan
Robbie Williams has told how he had to fight off a fan who tried to molest him as he played live - by pulling her by the hair. The singer was performing at Amsterdam Arena when he dragged a beautiful woman called Sabine from the audience to the stage. But speaking about the incident for the first time to Radio 1 he said he regretted his actions when she started writhing on top of him. In an interview with Sara Cox being broadcast on her Breakfast Show, he said he has been regularly inviting members of the crowd on stage. He said: "I got one out one night and she'd not washed and she smelt, quite frankly." But picking out Sabine he thought: "I'm going to have a good time here so I picked a good looking one. "She gets up on stage and she puts her hands down my pants, her tongue down my mouth and she was trying to rip my vest off and I'm singing, trying to maintain the fact that these people think I'm a bit cool. "At one point she was locked like a vice grip and she's writhing with me. I've tried to pull her off and sit her next to me but she straddles the top of me and starts grinding - now normally this wouldn't be a problem, but there's 60,000 other people there so I try to pull her hair to make it look sexy but I'm actually trying to pull her off of me." Williams also said he realises he has now reached the Madonna and Michael Jacksons proportions in terms of the audiences he can attract. "When you're in the middle of a storm you don't actually know how big it is. And every now and again I ask myself who else plays stadiums? The Jacksons, Madonna, U2 and I go, 'bloody hell, I must be that big'. "You can't get a perspective of what it is or who you are or what your fame's like because you're not looking at it from the outside. I'm just a bit giddy with my own success at the minute. I mean that in a very humble way," added Williams who begins a three-night stint at Knebworth in Hertfordshire on Friday.
