Death Cab for Cutie Disses Donald Trump in New Song "Million Dollar Loan"
One of Donald Trump’s many claims from the 2016 campaign trail that got fact checkers scurrying to their records was that he’d built his massive empire off a small loan from his father. As it turns out, Fred Trump loaned his son nearly a million dollars to help him build New York’s Grand Hyatt hotel in 1978, the move that put the younger Trump on the map. In a brand new song to kick off a multi-faceted anti-Trump initiative, Death Cab For Cutie has made the Republican candidate's dubious claim its target.
It’s called “Million Dollar Loan,” and it's the first installment of a Dave Eggers-headed series called "30 Days, 30 Songs". Every day through Election Day 2016, an artist will share a previously-unreleased song geared towards ensuring Trump never sniffs the White House. From Death Cab, we get the lyric video for "Million Dollar Loan," produced by Simian Design. It’s actually a soothingly catchy song, as strong as anything off their 2015 album Kintsugi. It doesn’t sound outwardly bitter, but their point is clear:
“You reap what you sow
From a million dollar loan
Call your father on the phone
And get that million dollar loan.”
"30 Days, 30 Songs" will also include submissions from Aimee Mann, Thao Nguyen, clipping., My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Bhi Bhiman and a previously unreleased live recording from the still-broken-up R.E.M.. All proceeds will go towards the Center for Popular Democracy (CDP), particularly its efforts to register all American citizens to vote.
Gibbard's statement on "Million Dollar Loan" below:
Lyrically, “Million Dollar Loan” deals with a particularly tone deaf moment in Donald Trump’s ascent to the Republican nomination. While campaigning in New Hampshire last year, he attempted to cast himself as a self-made man by claiming he built his fortune with just a “small loan of a million dollars” from his father. Not only has this statement been proven to be wildly untrue, he was so flippant about it. It truly disgusted me. Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unworthy of the honor and responsibility of being President of the United States of America, and in no way, shape or form represents what this country truly stands for. He is beneath us.

Tupac and R.E.M.'s songs added to U.S. library
2Pac's song "Dear Mama" and R.E.M.'s track "Radio Free Europe" have been declared American national treasures - the records will be added to a U.S. archive of culturally significant recordings.
The songs are among 25 new additions to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry, a government archive which preserves audio documents considered important for future generations.
There are only 300 recordings currently in the collection.
Shakur's song was lauded as a "moving and eloquent homage to both his own mother and all mothers struggling to maintain a family in the face of addiction, poverty and societal indifference" by members of the National Recording Preservation Board.
Other entries this year include Willie Nelson's 1975 album "Red Headed Stranger", comedian Bill Cosby's 1964 comedy compilation "I Started Out As A Child", and Patti Smith's debut 1975 album "Horses". Source: Ananova

R.E.M.'s political new album
R.E.M. have announced their new album will be released in October just before the US presidential election.
Michael Stipe says the band's 13th album will be one of its most political to date, reports Rolling Stone.
"At this time, as an American, I feel like the angriest pacifist in the world, and I don't think I'm alone in that," says Stipe. "It's not an easy time to live through.
"For better or worse, the current state of the world has had a profound impact on the way I'm writing.
"But this isn't a downer of a record. Even the most depressing R.E.M. song is going to have a glimmer of hope in it."
Stipe is currently finishing the album in Miami with guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills.
The political tracks include a version of the internet-only release Final Straw, written prior to the Iraq war, and I'm Gonna DJ, about the 1999 World Trade Organization riots in Seattle.
The album, produced by Pat McCarthy who handled 1998's Up and 2001's Reveal, features the debut of new drummer Bill Rieflin. Source: Ananova

R.E.M. Miami Bound To Finish New Album
R.E.M. is heading to Miami for "the final phase of recording and mixing" of its next studio album, according to a report from manager Bertis Downs on the group's official Web site. R.E.M. has already logged time in Vancouver and the Bahamas while working on the set, which is due in the fall via Warner Bros.
"They are making a very cool record with a lot of things that sound nothing like them, plenty of things that do, and a strong sense of melody throughout (and no reggae or overtly island mon tings that I hear!)," Downs reports. "If you are already an R.E.M. fan, I cannot imagine you not liking this one; if you aren't a fan, maybe you will be when you hear it."
Among the tracks being considered for inclusion are "The Outsiders," "On the Fly," "Leaving New York," "Wanderlust," "Electron Blue," "Aftermath" and "Magnetic North." The album is being produced by the group with Pat McCarthy.
R.E.M. is planning to tour extensively in the fall, including visiting cities the group has never played during its 20-plus-year career. Frontman Michael Stipe told Billboard.com in March that the trek would play Europe "at least twice."
In other R.E.M. news, Michael Stipe duets with Mandy Moore on a cover of the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" in the upcoming film "Saved," which the vocalist produced via his Single Cell company. Guitarist Peter Buck recently laid down a guest spot on the Thrills' upcoming Virgin album, expected out early next year. Source: BillBoard
