Misfits Finally Name a Drummer For Their Upcoming Reunion Gigs
Back when the Misfits announced the live return of their “original” lineup, the horror punks wouldn’t name the drummer they had in tow. Now, just days ahead of their Sept. 4 Denver Riot Fest gig, the Misfits have revealed the identity of the man teased as Glenn Danzig’s “favorite drummer.”
It’s Dave Lombardo, and he’s a good one. Lombardo is a founding member of Slayer (with whom he’s played as recently as 2013) who has also drummed with bands like Testament and Suicidal Tendencies. Breaking the news to Rolling Stone, all parties shouted out the the interlocking lineages of the Misfits and metal. "The Misfits created the horror punk attitude and had a massive influence on modern rock, punk and metal," Lombardo said. Bassist Jerry Only added, “I think the darker side of punk we created with the Misfits spawned the growth and evolution of punk into thrash, and sired bands like Metallica and Slayer, just as we inspired countless others in the punk revolution.”
So yeah, the historical side check out.
For now, the retooled Misfits (also featuring guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein) have only two dates planned: Sept. 4 in Denver and Sept. 18 at Riot Fest’s Chicago stop. In recent interviews, they’ve left the door open to future projects, though this figures to hinge on how these shows go.
The two planned gigs are Danzig’s first with the Misfits since 1983. He was engaged in frequent legal disputes with Only in the years that followed, though they’ve since buried the hatchet. When they did play together, their onstage chemistry was often... volatile. How they do next month remains to be seen, but with Lombardo behind the kit, we’re essentially assured one quarter of the Misfits will be completely on point.

Slayer Is Getting Its Own Comic Book: Check Out the Two Gruesome Covers
Slayer is currently out in San Diego performing and signing autographs at Comic-Con -- a fitting way to hype the latest project they’ve got in store.
The metal legends and their label Nuclear Blast are teaming for a Slayer-inspired comic book series premiering later this year via Dark Horse Comics. Rolling Stone broke the news, along with a little teaser -- the two covers (a main one and an alternate) set to adorn the first issue in what’s planned as a three-book series.
Below, check out the two cover looks for Slayer: Repentless, Vol. 1, designed by Glenn Fabry and Eric Powell. Fabry did the main one, featuring a bloody-faced character from the story and Powell designed the alternate, a grizzly take on the classic Slayer logo.
The books are being written by Jon Schnepp. He’s taken inspiration from the band’s videos for "Repentless" and "You Against You,” but it seems Slayer itself won’t be a focal point. Instead, their lyrics and overall aesthetic are driving the storyline. Schnepp likens it to “a road movie of horror” that “goes across many states” and says he’s been driven by “news items that are tearing up our country right now.”
The interior art is being done by Guiu Vilanova.

Ulrich Says More "Big Four" Shows Could Happen In 2011 Or 2012
Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has told U.K.'s Classic Rock magazine that further "Big Four" shows — featuring Metallica along with Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax - could happen in 2011 or 2012.
"The vibe on this thing the "Big Four" tour is so big, we'd be stupid to ignore it," Ulrich said. "You know on your iPhone, you can move the weather maps up and down? Well, the "Big Four" is quickly moving up to the top in terms of potential occurrences for the next couple of years."
But foremost in Ulrich's mind at the moment is enjoying some well-earned time off.
"We started in May 2008, so we've got to go and lie down pretty soon!" he said. "We've got three runs out in Australia, Japan and New Zealand in the Fall, then we're going to take a little bit of a breather because at that point we will have been two-and-a-half years on the road.
"So I would champion trying to do this the "Big Four" tour in 2011 or 2012, obviously in England and the United States. It's just a matter of logistics. I don't think there's anybody involved who considers there's a sell-by date on this.
"But here's the stuff: on November 20th my ass is going home. I'm going to sit at home, and I know the other fellas in the band are gong to do the same thing. I would say we're going to take at least six months off and do nothing, and then at some point in the spring or summer of 2011 we'll start to figure out what to do next." Source: DarkSide.ru

Megadeth Frontman Dave Mustaine met Slayer's Kerry King
Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has checked in with the following update:
"Droogies!
Last night after the Chargers loss, I drove home dejected and dropped off the guys that rode with us, picked-up my car, and headed back to Temecula.
It was about an hour later that I left my apartment and drove to TGIF in Temecula and met up with Kerry King (Slayer), and hung out for about 45 minutes, had some drinks, he ate (I got sick from the Margaritas at the game), and we just talked about the past, about the future, and a lot about stuff that is just private talk between two old friends that are trying to get to know each other again.
I really, really had a good time seeing KK last night, although not as much as the bartenders that were serving two of the Four Horsemen. I thought that the guy was going to start crying when we started talking and the guy realized who we were. I had a beanie and my hair tied up, and KK was in a hoodie with a beanie on top. So it wasn't like we were trying to be noticed. We were pretty well disguised and we left, shook hands, did a bro hug, and I walked off to my car and he to his.
I feel sorry for the first couple of Carnage shows. Because we are really pissed and ready to play!
Come on American Carnage!" Source: DarkSide.ru

Body Count Is Back!
Body Count, the metal band fronted by legendary rapper Ice-T, made an appearance this past Sunday night (September 6) at the Vans Warped Tour 15th-anniversary party at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles. The group played a 20-minute set, covered Slayer, talked a ton of trash and closed with their controversial classic "Cop Killer". Also on the bill were NoFX, Katy Perry, Pennywise, Bad Religion и Rise Against.
Check out video footage of Body Count's performance here.
Body Count's last album, "Murder 4 Hire", came out in 2006 via Escapi Music. Lyrically, the songs ranged from political ("The End Game"), personal ("You Don't Know Me [Pain]"), and religious ("The Passion Of The Christ"), to obsession ("In My Head"), armegeddon ("Dirty Bomb"), hate ("Lies") and relationships. A eulogy for fallen band member D-Roc was also included ("D Rocs [RIP]") as was a hilarious take on deep south rednecks ("Down In The Bayou"). The CD closed with "Mr. C's Theme", a show-stopping hard-rock instrumental. Source: DarkSide.ru

Dave Lombardo: "Even At 43, I'm Still A Primed, Well-Oiled Machine"
Scott Mervis of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently conducted an interview with Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.
On new metal bands:
"I've been listening ... I've been trying to listen to these new and upcoming bands. I don't want to pass judgment on any one of them. My pet peeve with these bands is the fact that they record these records that they can't deliver live. They're so processed by computers. When I listen to a band, I listen to the drummer. They process and lose what the drummer is supposed to do. It just becomes a typewriter and there's no feel, there's no soul in the drummer. When you lose that, it becomes very bland. Yeah, you have all these breakdowns, all these tight jigajit-jigajit until they juice that and there's nothing left. It's very disappointing."
On the "Cookie Monster" vocalsL
"Yeah. Monster-sounding vocals mixed in with all that sweet vocal melody [b.s.]. It's like, 'C'mon man.' You know who did that well, though? Slipknot. It was natural for Corey Taylor to jump from the melodic voice into the screaming voice, but bands these days? Huh. Very disappointing."
On how newer bands react to Slayer:
"Yeah, of course, they've heard of Slayer, but I think what they've done is, they've not looked at the roots. In other words, they learned how to walk before they learned how to crawl. These bands, sometime, they go straight for the sprint marathon and lose what this music is, what they need to put into it to make it breathe. You need to create life into the music."
On Slayer's gruesome, controversial lyrics:
"It's all an art form. I don't have any problems with Stephen King or any horror movie writers or artists who depict horror or pain. If anybody has a problem, they're pretty narrow-minded to look upon music as the single source of problems in this world. It's the people who are born cracked. I mean, I play the music, I listened to the music. I'm not going out and killing anybody or trashing buildings or whatever. It has nothing to with the music."
On whether any organizations similar to the PMRC are still all over Slayer's back over the band's lyrics:
"No, because they realize how dumb they are. Time has showed them that, hey, we're not going anywhere. You're not going to shut us up. You want a little sticker on our record? Fine, put a little sticker on our record, but it's not going to change anything."
On whether he's slowed down at all with age:
"Even at 43, I'm still a primed, well-oiled machine. I've seen bands where it's like 'God, please shoot me if I ever look or play like that.' With Slayer, we're still as brutal as we were as kids. They could roll up in their wheelchairs and play guitars, just as long as I'm beating the [crap] out of the drums, it's all good." Source: DarkSide.ru

Warbringer complete recording process & US Tour with Exodus!
The buzz surrounding LA thrashers Warbringer is simply astounding following a slew of high-profile US shows alongside the legendary Exodus and overwhelmingly positive reactions to the group’s self-released EP. Upon signing a worldwide deal with Century Media Records, the quintet entered the studio with acclaimed producer Bill Metoyer, who helped shape legendary albums from the likes of Slayer, D.R.I. and Sacred Reich. This effort is shaping up to be one of the most vicious debuts to come along in years and is destined to add another glorious chapter to thrash metal’s illustrious history.
John Kevill (vocals) states: "So far the recording's gone very well. Everything is now tracked, and mixing is currently in full swing. Everyone's pretty happy with how it’s shaping up, and we all feel it’s a huge step up for us. Working with Bill has been awesome. It’s been very laid back, and we've received a lot of good feedback and input from him. Counting bonus material and everything, we did a total of 14 tracks. The cover art is also looking pretty bad-ass. The whole thing will be done in a couple of weeks, and we can’t wait to unleash it upon the masses.”
While Warbringer has built a rabid local fan base playing with others in the LA thrash revival scene, they’re set to join Exodus, Arsis and Goatwhore on their US tour in January. These young thrash warriors (4 out of the 5 aren’t even of legal drinking age) are prepared to bring their definitive brand of violent combat thrash to audiences worldwide.
Never before has the evil, no-holds barred sound of Baloff-era Exodus, Slayer’s "Hell Awaits", and Kreator’s "Pleasure to Kill" been revived and revitalized for the 21st century in such a strikingly inspired and pure fashion. In February 2008 thrash will be back with a vengeance!

Skinlab returned from a very successful stint
The mighty Bay Area quartet Skinlab have just returned home from a very successful stint on the Jagermesiter tour alongside labelmates Arch Enemy, Hatebreed and Slayer. Recently Steev Esquivel (vocals) checked in with the following tour update and the band's future plans, "Yo yo, what up everyone, we're back and coming to you proud and clear!! The Slayer tour has been an experience that we'll never forget, we had such a killer time hanging with all the bands/crews and of course all our Jager peeps(freaks)!!! We got to play in front of thousands of die hard Slayer fans not to mention our very own showing up early enough to catch our brief 20 minute set.To our surprise we didn't get"Slayered"(a term used when the crowd starts telling you to get the fuck off the stage, and starts chanting the almighty Slayer......Slayer!!!!) Not even once!!! .We're definatly proud to say that, and can all agree that it was the biggest hightlight of our carrers!! Getting to see them ever night with the original line up was sick! They are the Kings of Metal Straight Up!!!! The set list was brutal, lights we're awesome, crowd was insane. The way a Metal concert should be!
As soon as we were done it was all about grabbing a few shots of Jager/Beers......ok, lots of 'em. By the time Arch Enemy was on we'd already be in the crowd chillin with all the metal heads. Arch Enemy kicked ass, Angela was brutal as fuck and the rest of the guys we're amazing and hell of cool. From what we we're talking maybe we'll be getting together in the future for a tour together.(if you don't have the new Arch Enemy.......Get It!) Much respect to Hatebreed and crew, those boys know how to throw down, they're Heavy as fuck, they got the crowd worked into a mass wirlwind with circle pits going 3 at a time at some points......it was sick!! We'd stand on the side stage just trippin. It was amazing watching them every night. They have come a long way, and it showed proof that if you stick to you guns, you will prevail. All in all it was a killer ass run of dates, everyone on the tour was cool as fuck, we got to live out our childhood dreams, what else can i say..........other than if all goes good we'll be out for some more shows on the next JagerMusic tour!!
Keep an eye open for The Nerve Damage Sessions due in 2004, as well as a new full-length that should be out before then end of next year. Expect nothing less than a sick ass Skinlab record. We're not going back to our roots or taking the best qualities of our last few records, we're pissed and it's gonna show through our music. We've been paying our dues for the last 10 years, watching bands/scenes come and go. Fuck the drama we're moving forward and gonna write a brutal yet dynamic album that we'll be able to look back at in another 10 years and be proud of. It's obvious that what we do isn't any sort of "1-hit wonder' or a "flash in the pan", we haven't peaked yet and we're still hungry.Time to put on some shit kickers!!
