2003-07-21 | ZZ Top play new album at Montreux | ZZ Top have performed songs from their long awaited new album at the final night of the Montreux Jazz Festival.
The band, on a European tour, will release Mescalero on September 8, almost five months after it had been due.
The delay was caused by a restructuring of the RCA label during the spring.
"The band delivered an album of great quality and substance back in April," said RCA's Hugh Surratt.
"At that time we felt that, in the interest of the band and their music, it deserved a well-planned and coherent roll out programme. Rather than rush it out, we consulted with the band and their management who agreed to wait until an optimal release circumstance could be formulated."
The 16-track album was produced by lead singer/guitarist Billy F Gibbons. The band recorded 15 original tracks for Mescalero, as well as a cover of Tramp, popularised by Otis Redding and Carla Thomas in the late 1960s, says Billboard.
"The album has some of that old ZZ sound," Gibbons says. "It's the same three guys playing the same three chords but we've gone in some new directions with them."
With its original lineup rounded out by bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard, ZZ Top is celebrating 34 years together.
