And then I said, 'OK, that does it. No more Mr. Nice Guy. The gloves are off.' And they said, 'You mean you were being a nice guy?' And I said, 'Yeah. I can get a lot worse.' 2010-06-22 | Slipknot's Paul Gray Died Of Accidental Morphine Overdose |
According to DesMoinesRegister.com, Slipknot bass player Paul Gray died of an accidental overdose of morphine and fentanyl, a medical examiner has ruled.
Gray's body was discovered about 10:50 a.m. May 24 by a maintenance worker at TownePlace Suites in Urbandale, Iowa.
A hypodermic needle lay near the bed, and "all kinds of pills" surrounded Gray, who was hunched over in the corner of the room, according to a 911 call.
Polk County Medical Examiner Dr. Gregory Schmunk said today that it was two injected drugs — fentanyl is a synthetic form of morphine — that killed Gray. The pills did not contribute to his death, Schmunk said.
Gray also suffered from significant heart disease, Schmunk said.
Schmunk completed a death certificate on Friday afternoon.
Private funeral services for Gray were held on May 28 in Des Moines, Iowa.
The eight surviving members of Slipknot held a news conference on May 25 at Wells Fargo Arena in the band's native stomping grounds of Des Moines, Iowa to address Gray's death. Also present at the event was Gray's brother Tony and widow Brenna, who spoke briefly at the end of the conference.
"He was everything that was wonderful about this band and about this group of people," Corey Taylor said. "The only way I can sum up Paul Gray is 'love.' Everything he did, he did for everyone around him whether he knew you or not ... and that's what he's left behind for us: absolute love. I will miss him with every fiber of my heart, as will everybody at this table and everyone who knew him. He was the best of us."
"It's very important that everybody on the outside of us understands that Paul Gray was the essence of the band Slipknot. ... Paul was there from the very, very beginning, and none of us would be on the path that we're on now in life or have the sorts of life that we have without him," percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan added. "Paul loved the fans. He was kind of the person in the band that really wanted everybody in the band to always get along and just concentrate on the band. He was a really great friend and a really great person. He's going to be sadly missed, and the world is going to be a different place without him."
"It's very hard for me right now," added drummer Joey Jordison. "I just want to say that I love you, Paul, very much. You'll be sorely missed by the world over."
Sid Wilson, the band's DJ, credited Gray with introducing him to the band, which he described as a family.
"To me, that's the most important thing," Wilson said. "That in everyone he met there was a change in their life. He was so good at giving everyone a different perspective, and I love him for that."
Percussionist Chris Fehn said when Gray called "you just felt good," and he remembered the bass player as giving "the best hugs out of everyone I ever hugged. When he grabbed on to you, you could feel the love he had for you."
Brenna Gray spoke last, mentioning the couple's unborn child while discussing her husband.
"Paul was my husband, an amazing person, and I want people to remember him for that," Brenna said. "And his daughter will remember him for the way he was."
Paul and his wife were reportedly expecting their first child in September. Source: DarkSide.ru |

2009-10-13 | Eluveitie: New Album Title, Artwork Revealed | Swiss pagan horde Eluveitie has finished recording its third album, "Everything Remains", for an early 2010 release via Nuclear Blast Records. The band's mainman, Chrigel Glanzmann, is currently attending the mixing sessions at Nott-In Pill studios in Wales with Colin Richardson (Slipknot, Machine Head, Kreator, Behemoth, Bullet For My Valentine) and Martyn "Ginge" Ford.
Commented Glanzmann: "Right now I'm with Colin and Martyn working on the mix of the album. And believe me, the mix will be mind-blowing! Well, what can I say… Colin is just a pure genius!
"We can look back at two extremely intense months of working our asses off recording the album. It has been an intense, exhausting, but also satisfying time with all of us giving 150% in. Many things developed very spontaneously and songs became very authentic, pure and genuine.
"Speaking of the recording, I have to mention the amazing job of Tommy Vetterli [Coroner, Kreator], for sure, who really worked his balls off for the album! Once again he assured his position among the world’s best engineers. That's what Colin Richardson stated about his work: 'One of the best drum and guitar trackings I've ever heard!' Furthermore, we can already give you a first glimpse of the artwork, which has again been done by famous artist Travis Smith, who already did the cover for 'Spirit'.
"Lyrically, the album consists of diverse stories and narrations from ancient Gallia: Historical occurrences and fates of individuals as well as myths and legends bequeathed throughout the centuries. Yet the lyrics pretty much focus on the 'human' aspects of those historical happenings and also behold them with some questioning and probably also with a slightly bittersweet smile, being well aware of the fact that today we simply cannot tell how things exactly have been back then." 2009-08-04 | Dave Lombardo: "Even At 43, I'm Still A Primed, Well-Oiled Machine" | Scott Mervis of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently conducted an interview with Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.
On new metal bands:
"I've been listening ... I've been trying to listen to these new and upcoming bands. I don't want to pass judgment on any one of them. My pet peeve with these bands is the fact that they record these records that they can't deliver live. They're so processed by computers. When I listen to a band, I listen to the drummer. They process and lose what the drummer is supposed to do. It just becomes a typewriter and there's no feel, there's no soul in the drummer. When you lose that, it becomes very bland. Yeah, you have all these breakdowns, all these tight jigajit-jigajit until they juice that and there's nothing left. It's very disappointing."
On the "Cookie Monster" vocalsL
"Yeah. Monster-sounding vocals mixed in with all that sweet vocal melody [b.s.]. It's like, 'C'mon man.' You know who did that well, though? Slipknot. It was natural for Corey Taylor to jump from the melodic voice into the screaming voice, but bands these days? Huh. Very disappointing."
On how newer bands react to Slayer:
"Yeah, of course, they've heard of Slayer, but I think what they've done is, they've not looked at the roots. In other words, they learned how to walk before they learned how to crawl. These bands, sometime, they go straight for the sprint marathon and lose what this music is, what they need to put into it to make it breathe. You need to create life into the music."
On Slayer's gruesome, controversial lyrics:
"It's all an art form. I don't have any problems with Stephen King or any horror movie writers or artists who depict horror or pain. If anybody has a problem, they're pretty narrow-minded to look upon music as the single source of problems in this world. It's the people who are born cracked. I mean, I play the music, I listened to the music. I'm not going out and killing anybody or trashing buildings or whatever. It has nothing to with the music."
On whether any organizations similar to the PMRC are still all over Slayer's back over the band's lyrics:
"No, because they realize how dumb they are. Time has showed them that, hey, we're not going anywhere. You're not going to shut us up. You want a little sticker on our record? Fine, put a little sticker on our record, but it's not going to change anything."
On whether he's slowed down at all with age:
"Even at 43, I'm still a primed, well-oiled machine. I've seen bands where it's like 'God, please shoot me if I ever look or play like that.' With Slayer, we're still as brutal as we were as kids. They could roll up in their wheelchairs and play guitars, just as long as I'm beating the [crap] out of the drums, it's all good." Source: DarkSide.ru |
2009-06-17 | Slipknot: "Susan Boyle is incredible" | Metalheads Slipknot impressed by "great" singer
Susan Boyle is now a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and her ever-growing army of celebrity supporters is becoming more diverse by the day.

Masked frontman Corey Taylor told ContactMusic.com: "Susan Boyle is incredible.
"Somebody told me about the show and I said, 'I have got to see this - 'I Dreamed A Dream', are you kidding me?'
"I put it on and she was fantastic. The people on that panel were in tears! When Susan leans into it she's great."
Corey is also convinced that Boyle's recent bout of exhaustion and questionable mental health has only added to her charm.
He explained: "She's a little bit crazy, but aren't we all? Anyone who's worth their salt is a little bit bent out of shape." Source: Ananova |

2004-04-27 | Slipknot fan dies | A Slipknot fan has died after suffering a heart attack at a show in Detroit earlier this month.
Alecia Holst, 21, from Middleville, Michigan, was taken seriously ill on April 16 during the band's gig at Harpo's Concert Theatre, during a gig on the Jagermeister Tour. She died four days later.
Alecia, a student at Central Michigan University, had no history of heart trouble, but is said to have experienced a sudden arrhythmia at the concert, before being treated by paramedics on the street.
She underwent CPR for 20 minutes and was eventually revived. However her condition worsened in the aftermath of the show.
Alecia's mother, Marcia, who ruled-out any blame on the conditions at the concert, explained: "If she had survived with her heart, she would have had no capability as far as brain activity."
According to MTV, there were no drugs or alcohol in her system. Source: DotMusic |
2003-07-23 | Immolation Frontman To Appear On All-Star Death Tribute CD | Immolation frontman Ross Dolan is the latest musician added to the list of guest performers set to appear on the forthcoming Death tribute album currently being put together by former Death/Testament guitarist James Murphy (ex-Malevolent Creation/Suffocation) drummer Dave Culross (ex-Malevolent Creation) vocalist Brett Hoffmann and CKY guitarist Deron Miller.
As previously reported, Slipknot guitarist Mick Thomson and bassist Paul Gray have both been confirmed as "major contributors" to the forthcoming CD, while former Death/Massacre and current Six Feet Under bassist Terry Butler will contribute "some bass tracks" to the album, which is tentatively scheduled to be recorded beginning in mid-to-late August at SR Studios (Murderdolls) in Des Moines, Iowa.
The exact track listing for the as-yet-untitled tribute CD is currently under wraps. However, the following cuts are definitely set to appear on the effort, according to Murphy:
01. Land Of No Return
02. Forgotten Past
03. Lowlife
04. Lack Of Comprehension
05. Jealousy
Murphy, who is spearheading the project and is the primary beneficiary of the funds raised through the sales of the album, has yet to secure a label deal for the tribute CD, which is expected to surface in early 2004. If the project fails to get picked up by a label soon, it will be financed by the band itself and sold to small distributors and online stores and web sites.
