2008-06-11Bareilles backs Radiohead on cost
Sara Bareilles has backed Radiohead’s honesty box system and applauded fans for their reaction to the pricing policy. Speaking exclusively to Orange, the US singer-songwriter told us that she has shared other artists’ music in the past, but has faith in music fan loyalty to musicians. Sara said: “I've always been the person to say burn the cds [and] share the music because that's what they're there for.” But Love Song tunesmith Sara does worry for smaller acts. She said: "There's bands who don't know whether they can make their next house payment." She added: “I think it's great to subvert the system and get the industry to think about refocusing the energy in terms of getting the music out there. I think it's really interesting that Radiohead made a load of album sales off that.”

2008-06-04Coldplay's quest for Timberlake sound
Chris Martin has said that Coldplay have written a new song directly influenced by Justin Timberlake. Less than a week after citing Westlife and Radiohead as musical touchstones for their forthcoming record, "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends", Martin now says Timberlake's sound was used as inspiration for new track, Lost! He tells Virgin Radio: "One song we're always trying to chase is Cry Me A River by Justin Timberlake, in terms of the beats and everything. I know that is one of [drummer] Will's favourite songs. And he did all the drums on Lost!" Viva La Vida... is due out on June 12.

2008-03-14Nine Inch Nails hammer Radiohead
Nine Inch Nails have slated the digital release of Radiohead's "In Rainbows". Despite NIN following Thom Yorke and co's footsteps by releasing their new album "Ghosts" digitally, frontman Trent Reznor has attacked the Oxford band's download as "low quality". "What they did was a cool thing... But if you look at what they did, though, it was very much a bait and switch to get you to pay for a MySpace-quality stream as a way to promote a very traditional record sale." He added: "By making it such a low quality thing, not even including artwork ... to me that feels insincere... but I don't see that as a big revolution (that) they're kinda getting credit for."

2008-02-04Radiohead allow sample
Radiohead have granted Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip the use of The Bendz track Planet Telex as a sample. The Dj duo, who rose to fame last year with Thou Shalt Always Kill, released a free unofficial single called Letter From God (To Man) featuring the Radiohead sample at Christmas and now hope to include it on their debut album. Scroobius Pip told the BBC: "We're in the process of getting clearance from Radiohead. It's really good because they've heard it and given their authorisation so we're really pleased. That means a lot to us even if we never get to release it. With Radiohead's approval they are now awaiting word from record label Parlophone for publishing rights. Orange contacted Parlophone for comment but they did not answer our questions in time for this story's publication.

2008-01-04Radiohead remix album halted
The anticipated release of a Radiohead remix album has been put on ice following a dispute over copyright. Rainydayz Remixes was an interpretation of the group's seventh album, In Rainbows, created by producer Amplive. It was due for release on January 10, until the original album's publishers blocked its distribution. On December 19, Warner/Chappell publishers sent Amplive's 1776 label a 'cease and desist' letter claiming that he'd made the record without publishing agreements. Amplive, who has issued a written and video statement asking anyone with copies of the remixes to remove them from the public domain, is hoping to get approval from Thom Yorke and co. before he proceeds. He said: "I think I need to talk to Radiohead and play them these remixes personally.. I know they'll dig 'em.

2007-12-21Muse praise Radiohead
Muse are the latest act to praise Radiohead's decision to release In Rainbows for a price decided by fans. Dominic Howard from the band reckons the decision made by Thom Yorke and co. to make their seventh album available in such as unique way has given the music industry a vital wake-up call. He told the Daily Mirror: "Bands are constantly thinking of the best ways to release music and a band like that doing it on their own shakes up the record companies and helps them realise that they are gradually becoming more and more useless." However, don't expect Muse to follow the Oxford band's lead anytime soon. "They're unsigned which means they are in a different position to us, so they can do whatever the hell they want - it's cool they did". Dominic added. The physical version of In Rainbows hits the shops on December 31.

2007-11-14EMI remove Radiohead ad
EMI have removed an advert for their Radiohead seven album boxset after it implied it was selling Radiohead's new boxset for In Rainbows. Following Radiohead's decision not to re-sign to EMI subsidiary Parlophone and join indie label XL Recordings, Parlophone are releasing Radiohead's back catalogue on the same day and at the same price as the In Rainbows boxset. According to The Guardian, if you searched for Radiohead on Google last week, a paid for advert would appear saying: "New Album 'Rainbow' now available on Boxset". Clicking on the ad would then take you to Parlophone's boxset. The newspaper asked EMI publicist Chris Latham about the ad who replied: "Parlophone were aware of the date source glitch and removed the link immediately." Radiohead aren't as miffed as you'd expect, instead those nice Oxford boys released a statement saying: "We accept that it was a genuine error and that it has been rectified." The In Rainbows discbox and Radiohead, the seven album box set, are both out on December 10.

2007-10-26Radiohead artwork ditched
Radiohead's cover artist has revealed that artwork for new album, In Rainbows was canned at the last minute. Long standing friend and collaborator of the band Stanley Donwood, confirmed he had designed artwork for the new album but the group had decided to hold it back before the album's download-only release. Speaking yesterday (October 24) on Radio 4's Today programme, Donwood said: "It was a last minute decision, it was all ready to go but ended up being left on the laptop." The visual artist even gave fans a hint of what the sleeve looked like, adding: "What did you miss out on? Well it's very colourful - I've finally embraced colour! It's a rainbow but it is very toxic, it's more like the sort of one you'd see in a puddle." Meanwhile, Donwood confessed he did not pay for the album, after Radiohead let fans name their own price for the record. "I paid no pence for the album," he declared. "I was just checking the website was working. If you paid nothing the screen flashed up 'we value your custom, you're in a queue', whereas if you paid for it you went straight to the download code, just a bit of irony that no one got as normal."

2007-10-18Editors advice for Radiohead
Birmingham band Editors reckon that Radiohead should have let fans listen to their new album before deciding how much to pay for it. Thom Yorke and co. famously shook up the music industry on October 10 by making their seventh album In Rainbows available for download at a cost the customer chooses - a misjudged decision, in the opinion of Editors' Russell Leetch. After admitting that he hadn't downloaded the record, Leetch said: "I think if Radiohead wanted to be really clever then they should let people listen to it first then decide what to pay." Clearly sceptical about the shift in the way music is sold, the bassist voiced his concerns that it was only established artists that were able to give albums away for free. He said: "I worry for new acts and where that leaves them when they need financial help and support from a record label." Resisting the digital age, Russell also dismissed the suggestion that the days of the CD are over. "I still like buying things on vinyl and CD as a collector. I don't quite trust bitrates and hard drives," he said. "We've all seen those films where super electronic meltdown happens. We don't want that to happen with music!"

2007-10-03Radiohead prefer no label
Radiohead prefer not having a record label calling it: "liberating". On Monday (October 1), the band announced they would sell their new album, In Rainbows, online without a record label - giving buyers the choice to choose what price to pay. During the recording stage, Thom Yorke told NME: "It's really liberating not to feel part of the record company structures." Oxford man Thom was inspired to record without a label by Tom Waits who made one of his most critically acclaimed albums, Swordfishtrombones, whilst out of contract. Thom explains: "I think that was just him finding his own space, and removing himself from the bits he hated about where he'd been before. And I think that's what we're in the process of doing." In Rainbows will be available on the Radiohead website from October 10.

Last month the band announced that their seventh studio LP would not be released until next year.

2004-05-24Radiohead team up with Bill Nighy
Radiohead are to team up with actor Bill Nighy for a duet of a version of a song from Love Actually. The performance of ballad Love is All Around by the band will provide the finale to a star-studded charity evening at the Oxford Playhouse, in their home city. The night of music, sketches, poetry, comedy and readings has been organised by actor Tom Hollander, co-star of the film Gosford Park, in aid of Helen House, Britain's first children's hospice. Hollander became involved with the Oxford hospice two years ago after his niece Imogen was born with severe brain damage and was cared for there. The line-up, which has only just been finalised, features anecdotes from John Mortimer, a comic speech by Sir Michael Gambon, a song from Hugh Laurie, readings from Griff Rhys Jones, Francesca Annis and comedians Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc. Comedian Steve Coogan will close the first half. The second half features Jeremy Irons reading The Lion and Albert, and a lullaby from Rosemary Norman, performances by Jerry Dammers of The Specials, Sinead Cusack, Rory Bremner and others. There will also be an auction of film memorabilia which includes a pair of Johnny Depp's signed underpants, a storyboard from American Beauty signed by director Sam Mendes and items from other stars such as Jude Law, Kate Winslett and Sir Ian McKellen. The hospice was founded in 1982 by Sister Frances Dominica and offers respite care, terminal care and bereavement support.

2004-04-27Radiohead scrap gig as Thom loses voice
Radiohead have had to cancel the final show of their Australian tour because Thom Yorke has lost his voice. He's suffering severe inflammation of his vocal chords, throwing the band's headlining show at the Coachella Festival in the US into doubt. Radiohead barely completed the first of two nights in Melbourne on Monday with Yorke's voice noticeably cracking during the performance, reports XFM. The band only played one encore with the frontman finishing the set by saying: "Sorry about the throat, we almost nearly cancelled tonight. Please forgive or kiss my throat frog." As a result the second show at the venue has been cancelled. Ticket holders have been promised refunds. A statement released by tour promoter Michael Chugg and Radiohead manager Bryce Edge reads: "Thom Yorke was examined by an ear, nose and throat specialist in Melbourne after developing significant loss of vocal quality and volume at the first Radiohead concert in Melbourne Monday night. Thom was barely able to finish the concert. "Today he has a marked hoarseness of voice and a significant upper airway infection and heavy inflammation of his vocal chords. If he was to sing in the next few days he would cause irreparable damage to his vocal ability in the future." Radiohead are due to headline the Coachella Festival on May 1. It is not yet known whether Yorke's illness will affect their appearance.

Radiohead and Coldplay are joint favourites to take this year's Panasonic Mercury Music Prize. Radiohead's Hail to the Thief became their third LP to make the the short-list, while Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head follows their debut as a Mercury nominee. Both are ranked 4-1 to take the title by bookmaker William Hill when the winner is announced on September 9. Eight of the shortlisted releases are debut albums, although Martina Topley-Bird - nominated for her first album Quixotic - has been up for the £20,000 prize in previous years. She provided vocals to Tricky's Maxinquaye album, which competed for the 1995 award. South London duo Floetry have found only limited success in the UK, but their higher profile in the US saw them nominated at the Grammys earlier this year and they have worked with acts such as Justin Timberlake. They are nominated for their debut Floetic. Hotly tipped garage act Dizzee Rascal finds himself on the shortlist little over a fortnight after he was hospitalised following a stabbing incident in Cyprus, where he was performing. The 18-year-old is nominated for his first album Boy in Da Corner. Other stars to be shortlisted for their debut releases are The Thrills, Soweto Kinch, The Darkness, Athlete and Terri Walker.
