2009-12-28 | Critics Vote Dance Act's Album Best Of 2009 | Music critics have voted US psychedelic dance act Animal Collective's record "Merriweather Post Pavilion" the album of the year.
The New York-based indie band topped HMV's annual "poll of polls" for 2009 and reflected a strong showing from acts signed to independent record labels.
The poll was voted for by critics and writers from the music and national press in the UK and Ireland and online sites, totalling 34 organisations.
Merriweather Post Pavilion received 13 nominations and was named album of the year by Mojo and Uncut magazines and The Sunday Times.
The January release, which reached number 26 in the charts, saw off the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "It's Blitz" into second and The XX's self-titled debut into third.
Fourth place was claimed by Brooklyn-based experimental rock outfit Dirty Projectors for their album "Bitte Orca", while Grizzly Bear grabbed fifth with their highly-rated title "Veckatimest".
The rest of the top 10 was made up of albums from Horrors, Fever Ray, Florence And The Machine, a class=vlin href=/vcat.phtml?action=va&singer=16859>Bat For Lashes and Wild Beasts.
Releases from Manic Street Preachers, Arctic Monkeys and Bob Dylan made the top 25.
Kasabian's "West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum" - credited by Q magazine as the album of the year - was voted the year's 29th finest record.

2008-07-15 | Dizzee Rascal inspired by Monkeys | Dizzee Rascal has revealed that he takes great inspiration from Arctic Monkeys’ works.
Dance Wiv Me rapper Dizzee, real-name Dylan Mills, says that he is following in frontman Alex Turner’s footsteps by "getting it all out while he’s young".
He told the Daily Star: "I haven’t seen much of Alex recently because he’s so busy. He’s got his hands full doing Arctic Monkeys and The Last Shadow Puppets and loads of other stuff."
He said: "I admire that, it’s cool. He’s getting it all out while he’s young. You’ve got to. It’s inspiring and I totally relate to it. I’m following the same path."
Dizzee also revealed that he loves that his music has become more popular, because now mums like him!
He explained: "It’s great being an artist today. You feel like you can do what you want. What I’m doing with mash-ups and collaborations has become mainstream. People’s mums are into me these days and everything." Source: Ananova |
2008-06-04 | Reverend talks political side project | Reverend And The Makers singer Jon McClure says his new band Mongrel will have a political edge.
Mongrel consists of Jon as singer and fellow Maker Joe Moskow on the keyboards along with Babyshambles guitarist Drew McConnell, former Arctic Monkeys bassist Andy Nicholson and rapper Lowkey.
According to Jon it may also feature collaborations with Pete Doherty and M.I.A.
Jon told Billboard.com: "We're producing it ourselves and I've paid for it so far out of my own pocket just because I believe in it.
"I'm excited about it because I think that it's an important record. We're saying things on the record that nobody's really had the b******* to say in the last eight years. We're really taking a few people to task, kind of like we're Public Enemy or something."

2008-01-22 | Monkeys shun BRITs to avoid TT | Arctic Monkeys are not going to attend the BRIT Awards.
It is even claimed that the Sheffield indie stars won't be attending because they don't won't to lose out to Take That.
A source told the Daily Mirror: "Everyone knows they (Arctic Monkeys) aren't big on awards and, at the moment they seem to have no intention of coming."
The source added: "It's a shame, as their ongoing fued with Take That could have added a real spark to proceedings."
Take That, infamously called "a load of b*******" by Arctics frontman Alex Turner at the 2006 Q Awards, are currently up for four awards, with the Monkeys having snagged three nominations.

2007-12-12 | Arctic Monkeys in album alternative | Arctic Monkeys are looking to release new material as soon as possible considering stand alone singles without an album.
The Sheffield band are keen to get stuck into recording and drummer Matt Helders told BBC 6Music about their plans.
He said: "We've got things written, several new ideas and new songs that are ready to record. We will do recording early on. We might not necessarily record and then release an album. We might just do little bits once or (release) singles."

2007-12-07 | Monkeys and Radiohead awards clash | Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead will go head to head at the 2008 South Bank Show arts awards.
Sheffield and Oxford's finest will compete in the Pop category at the prestigious awards ceremony that honours talent across the arts.
The gong will either go to Radiohead's In Rainbows, Arctic Monkeys' Favourite Worst Nightmare or Versatile Heart by folk singer Linda Thompson.
In the film category, Joy Division biopic Control takes on This Is England and Atonement.

2007-11-19 | Leona canes Monkeys' record | Leona Lewis has broken Arctic Monkeys' record for the fastest selling debut album of all time in Britain.
The 2006 X Factor winner stormed the album charts on Sunday (November 18), as her debut Spirit went straight to No 1 in the album charts shifting an incredible 375,000 copies in its first week.
Bleeding Love singer Leona outsold the Arctics' record by over 12,000 sales for their inaugural effort Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not.
Hackney-born Leona must have been popping the champagne last night as she had a double celebration with Bleeding Love topping the singles chart for the fourth consecutive week.

2007-10-09 | Kylie honoured at Q Awards | Kylie Minogue has been named idol of 2007 at this year's Q Awards.
The singer, who is still recovering from breast cancer, got a standing ovation as she picked up her award.
She said: "It's my first day back at work like this so it's very exciting and slightly nerve-wracking."
The Arctic Monkeys picked up the award for best act in the world today.
The band lost out in the best album category to Amy Winehouse for Back to Black and also missed out in the best live act category, won by Muse.
Manic Street Preachers took the award for the year's top track for Your Love Alone is Not Enough, while the Kaiser Chiefs got the best video for their track Ruby.
Enemy were best new act, while top breakthrough artist was Kate Nash.
Sir Paul McCartney won Icon of the year and former Blur frontman Damon Albarn took the prize for inspiration.
Collecting his award Sir Paul thanked his late wife, he said: "I thank Linda for seeing me through some real tough periods," he said, before thanking his former Beatle bandmates and his "fantastic, beautiful" children.

2007-09-25 | Arctic Monkeys biggest tour yet | Arctic Monkeys have announced their biggest UK tour yet.
In December the Sheffield foursome will play two dates dates at at London's Alexandra Palace, Manchester Central and Aberdeen AECC.
Alex Turner and the boys will be supported by The Rascals, friends of the Monkeys and lead by Miles Kane who is collaborating with Alex on a new album.

2007-09-13 | Q Awards nominations announced | Killers (US), Kaiser Chiefs and Muse all continued their good year yesterday (September 12) by each bagging three Q Award nominations.
Las Vegas rockers The Killers are up for Best Video, Best Live Act and Best Act In The World where they clash with Muse, Foo Fighters, U2 and Arctic Monkeys.
Muse also compete in the Best Live Act category and for the Best Track gong for their track "Knights Of Cydonia", while Kaisers nabbed nominations for Best Album, Best Video and Best Track - both for the catchy Ruby.
Enemy, Cherry Ghost, Pigeon Detectives, View and Mercury winners Klaxons will fight it out in the Best New Act section, not to be confused with the Best Breakthrough Act, which is contested for by Kate Nash, Mika, Calvin Harris, Jack Penate and Jamie T.
Canadian uber band Arcade Fire were rewarded with two nominations in the Best Album and Best Live Act categories and there were also nods for Lily Allen, Hard-Fi and Manic Street Preachers.

2007-06-22 | Arctics go for poetry | Arctic Monkeys have called in a poet to work on their next single.
Frontman Alex Turner has sought to get punk poet John Cooper Clarke involved as he is a massive fan after Clarke performed in a Sheffield pub Turner was working in when he was 16.
He was a big influence on Alex's career and the Monkey wants to get him to pen a rhyme for the front cover of Fluorescent Adolescent.
"Some musicians worship John Lennon or The Stones, but John is Alex's hero," a source told The Sun.

2007-03-29 | Noel wants Glastonbury gig | Noel Gallagher has pleaded with Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis to offer him a slot at Glastonbury this year.
Noel has just completed two acoustic shows in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust, and now he has set his sights on the acoustic tent at the Somerset festival in June.
"Playing the acoustic stuff at the festivals, that would be good," Noel told the NME.
"Actually, Glastonbury acoustic tent sounds nice! That would be good. Yeah, do us a favour, stick that in and Mr Eavis will give me a call!
"Saying that he'd probably put me on at the same time as Arctic Monkeys. The best slot is second on the bill on the Other Stage. I've never had that slot at Glastonbury, but we've done it at other festivals and it's great."

2007-03-15 | Arctic Monkeys to tour UK | Arctic Monkeys have announced an 11-date club tour of Britain this spring.
Tickets will be allocated by ballot to people on the band's mailing list.
A band statement reads: "As a thank you to all our loyal fans we are only offering the chance to buy tickets to those of you on our mailing list.
"We are trying hard to fight against touting and therefore invite you to take part in a fair ballot to get tickets for this tour.
"All successful applicants will be selected completely randomly by computer."
