Misfits Finally Name a Drummer For Their Upcoming Reunion Gigs
Back when the Misfits announced the live return of their “original” lineup, the horror punks wouldn’t name the drummer they had in tow. Now, just days ahead of their Sept. 4 Denver Riot Fest gig, the Misfits have revealed the identity of the man teased as Glenn Danzig’s “favorite drummer.”
It’s Dave Lombardo, and he’s a good one. Lombardo is a founding member of Slayer (with whom he’s played as recently as 2013) who has also drummed with bands like Testament and Suicidal Tendencies. Breaking the news to Rolling Stone, all parties shouted out the the interlocking lineages of the Misfits and metal. "The Misfits created the horror punk attitude and had a massive influence on modern rock, punk and metal," Lombardo said. Bassist Jerry Only added, “I think the darker side of punk we created with the Misfits spawned the growth and evolution of punk into thrash, and sired bands like Metallica and Slayer, just as we inspired countless others in the punk revolution.”
So yeah, the historical side check out.
For now, the retooled Misfits (also featuring guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein) have only two dates planned: Sept. 4 in Denver and Sept. 18 at Riot Fest’s Chicago stop. In recent interviews, they’ve left the door open to future projects, though this figures to hinge on how these shows go.
The two planned gigs are Danzig’s first with the Misfits since 1983. He was engaged in frequent legal disputes with Only in the years that followed, though they’ve since buried the hatchet. When they did play together, their onstage chemistry was often... volatile. How they do next month remains to be seen, but with Lombardo behind the kit, we’re essentially assured one quarter of the Misfits will be completely on point.
