2010-01-28 | Doherty Filmmaker Dies In "Drugs Overdose" |
A member of the Goldsmith family who recently made a documentary about troubled musician Peter Doherty has died after a suspected drug overdose.
Paramedics found the body of Robyn Whitehead - granddaughter of the late Teddy Goldsmith - at a flat in Hackney, east London, on Sunday.
It is understood drugs paraphernalia was discovered at the flat, which is reported to have been rented by a friend of Doherty.
Miss Whitehead's family said: "Robyn had an exceptional capacity for compassion and for love both to her family and close friends.
"To lose her so young and so far before her life's work was done is heartbreaking."
Scotland Yard said: "A post mortem will be carried out. Her death is not being treated as suspicious."
Miss Whitehead worked as a photographer and filmmaker.
The 27-year-old recently completed a documentary film The Road To Albion, which followed Doherty in the years after he left his band The Libertines.
A spokeswoman for the singer said: "Peter Doherty was shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death of Robyn Whitehead.
"Peter wishes to convey his condolences to Robyn's family and her close friends at this very difficult time."
Miss Whitehead's mother is Dido Whitehead, the cousin of socialite Jemima Khan and prospective Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith, and her father is 1960s filmmaker Peter Whitehead.
Miss Whitehead's death came as Doherty was fined for taking 13 wraps of heroin into court in his coat pocket.

2009-12-23 | Doherty Drug Charge After Court Appearance | Singer Peter Doherty has been charged with possession of heroin following his detention moments after a court hearing.
The Babyshambles singer was arrested at Gloucester Crown Court immediately after he escaped jail for driving offences.
The 30 year old pleaded guilty to drink-driving and careless driving following a gig at the town's Guildhall in front of 300 fans.
He was said to have given a reading of 50 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.
Doherty had earlier admitted to two counts of drugs possession and driving without a licence and insurance as part of the same incident.
He was ordered to pay £2,050 in fines and banned from driving for 18 months.
Immediately after the hearing finished Doherty was escorted from the court to the police station across the road.
Gloucestershire police have confirmed he has been charged with possession of heroin.
A spokeswoman said: "A 30-year-old man has been charged with possession of heroin, and was bailed to appear at Gloucester Magistrates in January."
It has emerged the singer could also be charged with offences linked to a hit-and-run which left a pedestrian in a critical condition.
His manager, Andrew Boyd, 42, of north London, has already appeared in court charged with a number of offences relating to the incident in Hadleigh, Suffolk, in September. Source: Ananova |
2009-08-20 | Pete Doherty: The Libertines Will Ride Again | Indie rock band The Libertines will perform again nearly six years on from their chaotic split, Pete Doherty has confirmed.
Doherty said the cult band would definitely reform for shows in 2010, even if his former bandmate and fellow frontman Carl Barat refuses to join in.
The band - idolised by the music press - disintegrated in 2004 at the peak of their success, when Barat and Doherty fell out over the latter's apparent dependency on heroin and crack cocaine.
Doherty was jailed for burgling Barat's flat, although the pair later made up and recorded a second album.
After their split, The Libertines played some shows without Doherty, to the singer's annoyance. Barat then formed Dirty Pretty Things.
Speaking to NME magazine ahead of his solo slot at V festival this weekend, 30-year-old Doherty says he is certain of a reunion with bassist John Hassall and drummer Gary Powell.
"It's going to happen, you know. But there's Biggles (Barat) to worry about," he said.
"If Biggles doesn't want to do it or gets cold feet or he thinks I'm still a crackhead, what am I going to do? Maybe I could reform the Libertines without him, like he did without me.
"I wouldn't really want to, but you've got to pay the bills. I'll put an advert in the NME: 'Carlos lookalike required'," he joked.
However, since the pair played an impromptu set together in May this year, with Powell on drums, a full reunion does not look out of the question.
The news will delight fans, who have displayed a continual fascination with the possibility of a Libertines reunion ever since the group split up.
Doherty went on to form Babyshambles after the demise of the Libertines, and also paved out a career as a solo artist.
However, he has become more widely known for his former relationship with supermodel Kate Moss and his regular court appearances related to his battle with drugs. Source: Ananova |
