2010-07-19 | Enslaved: New Album Artwork Unveiled |
Norwegian psychedelic post-black metal band Enslaved will release its new album, "Axioma Ethica Odini", in Europe on September 27 and in North America on September 28. The CD's cover artwork was created by the Norwegian artist Truls Espedal, who has painted every Enslaved album cover since 2001's "Monumension".
Commented Enslaved bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson: “On every new album cover, me and [rhythm guitarist/songwriter] Ivar Bjørnson come up with the idea of what the cover art shall include in terms of elements, symbolism and so forth. After that, we contact Truls and tell him about our ideas for the cover art. Then we arrange a meeting where we sit down for a couple of hours making sketches. Truls also has the opportunity to come up with his own ideas of how we can transform our original ideas the best possible way. He has made a masterpiece this time as well! The cover art is simply amazing! Amazing…"
Added Espedal: "I'm always excited about working with Enslaved, which is the reason I feel that too much time goes by between releases — ha, ha! But once again I sat down with Ivar and Grutle, and their ideas were more complex and interesting than ever. Also, their expectations and confidence that I'm able to come up with something better than before pushes me to set the bar even higher. This time around, we set out to expand further what we have done on earlier works: mixing the figurative paintings with the 'symbolic' design even more. By doing this, I feel that we are able to convey a lot more atmosphere, story, and a visually more interesting cover throughout. Hopefully other people will think the same. Good times." 2007-08-31 | Arsis - news on the upcoming album | Guitarist/vocalist James Malone of Virginia's Arsis has issued the following update:
"Despite the numerous headaches caused by our van's breakdown this summer, we spent time working on perfecting pre-production for our debut release for Nuclear Blast Records, tentatively titled 'We Are The Nightmare'. We will begin recording the album on September 3, 2007 at Planet Z Studios in Massachusetts with Zeuss (who has worked with Shadows Fall and Hatebreed) handling the production. I feel that this will be the most exciting ARSIS album to date. We are now a full band and every member has contributed to the writing process for this album. While it is more varied than anything we have ever written, I feel the result is a much more focused product."
Arsis drummer Darren Cesca added: "This is an album any fan of Arsis or heavy music in general should get excited about. We've really captured the band's sound and improved it in all aspects. It's dark, melodic, and very technical at times, but we wrote songs you can pump your fists to. I've definitely pushed my drumming very far for this record and I know the rest of the band will be pushing themselves as well. One thing's for sure: this is going to be one fun album to listen to. As soon as we finish recording, we plan on shooting a video for 'We Are the Nightmare' in October, then we’ll be hitting the road withEnslaved in November and Exodus in January. The album should be stores sometime in early 2008 and I am sure more touring will ensue after that. 2008 should be a busy year for us and we're looking forward to it!"
All of the Arsis recordings (which include two demos, one EP, and two full-length albums) have won the band many rabid fans among the metal underground, the metal press, and metal musicians themselves. Their 2004 debut, "A Celebration of Guilt", was praised to hell and back by Revolver magazine as "the best in the genre since At The Gates' legendary swan song ['Slaughter of the Soul']." 2003-07-17 | Solefald: Going After A "Purer, More Focused Sound" | Norway's Solefald are presently in Iceland writing material for their fifth full-length album, tentatively due in early 2004 through Century Media Records. "Composition has been going great, in a more classic Black Metal 1993-ish style...," the band write on their official web site. "Much of the material is now written, it sounds unmistakably like Solefald.
"Iceland has everything we wanted to get: Great barren landscapes, volcanoes, hot springs, sea, viking history, sagas and of course a good deal of brennivin (Icelandic booze)!
"The result of actually going to a site like Iceland to write Nordic/Viking music is a purer, more focused sound. This might be bad news for the fraction of Solefald fans that love 1999's "Neonism" and hate 1997's "The Linear Scaffold"… For the people more into the "…Scaffold" and our "Jernlov" demo (Iron Law, 1996), the new songs should hit and fit pretty well.
"During our stay we have witnessed the schizophrenic Icelandic weather, with rain one minute and sunshine the next. We have also been to a Viking festival and seen authentically dressed Vikings, swordfights, arts and crafts such as silverwork and tailoring, and there are rumours of a blot taking place this week - a blot is a sacrifice to the Norse gods in the Asatru pantheon, usually taking place in a natural setting. Our trip to Iceland is thus in all ways a return to our roots, both when it comes to music (Bathory, Darkthrone, Enslaved and Immortal feature prominently in our CD collection for the trip) and history —the new album will actually tell about a destiny of the Viking age, but fear not: the music that goes with it has taken command over the story in the old Solefald way."
