Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar Honored at BET Hip-Hop Awards
Snoop Dogg received the "I Am Hip Hop" award at the 11th annual BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta on Saturday.
Kendrick Lamar introduced Snoop Dogg in front of a packed crowd at the Cobb Energy Performing Centre. Lamar said Snoop Dogg "paved a way into many hearts" with his authentic rap flow and infectious persona.
When Snoop Dogg accepted his award, he said he felt misunderstood at the beginning of his career and made feel-good music for listeners.
Lamar took home Lyricist of the Year. After claiming his award, Lamar continued to praise Snoop Dogg. The rapper also told the crowd music is one of the best ways to bring people together, and thanked BET for putting together the show.
Fat Joe and Remy Ma won Track of the Year award for their song "All the Way Up." The Hustler of the Year honor went to DJ Khaled, and Best New Hip-Hop Artist was earned by Chance The Rapper, who was not in attendance.
Desiigner closed out the show with "Tiimmy Turner."
T.I. and several others offered passionate statements against police brutality of African-Americans.
Wearing all black, T.I. performed his politically charged song "We Will Not" as a stage full of people sporting the same dark attire held up "Black Lives Matter" signs. The rapper said he was motivated to write the song after hearing about a series of deaths of unarmed black people who were shot by police including Sandra Bland and Philando Castile.
Big K.R.I.T and Lecrae, a Christian rapper, expressed their thoughts on the matter through their own poems, and radio host Sway Calloway stood alongside Khaled and said, "We're at war." Actor Shameik Moore encouraged people to cast their vote.
T.I. said at the end of his performance that blacks should unite, adding, "They can't kill us all."
Gucci Mane, recently released from prison, was the first to hit the stage at the show. He performed four songs, kicking his set off with "First Day Out" and "First Day Out Tha Feds." The rapper was released in late May from a Federal Correctional Institution in Terre Haute, Indiana.
He served a three-year sentence after pleading guilty to aggravated assault for attacking a fan at an Atlanta nightclub. That sentence ran concurrently with a 39-month federal sentence he was given in 2014 for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
First-time host DJ Khaled followed with "Holy Key" with soul singer Betty Wright and a choir dressed in gold.
For the third straight year, Drake topped the nominees with 14 nominations.
The show will air Oct. 4 on BET.

Snoop Dogg to Guest Star in MTV's Pot Comedy "Mary + Jane"
Snoop Dogg is headed to television.
The rapper -- and weed aficionado -- will make an appearance in MTV's upcoming pot comedy "Mary + Jane". The news was revealed by the show's executive producers Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont at a panel for the series at the Television Critics Association press tour on Sunday morning (July 31).
The pair acknowledged that Snoop doesn't play himself but instead "a very, very special person" in the half-hour that sees stars Jessica Rothe and Scout Durwood play two twenty-something best friends who run an all-female marijuana delivery service in Los Angeles. Kaplan added: "You don't know when he's going to appear. You have to watch all the way to an end to see him."
In addition to guesting on the show, it was also announced that Snoop had joined the series as a executive producer (other EPs include Entertainment 360's Guymon Casady, Marcus Blakely and Jill McElroy), in addition to performing the theme song for the comedy. The exec producers promised other celebrity cameos throughout the season. Among them: Seth Green, Leonard Roberts, Andy Daly and Missi Pyle.
And the show's creative team is hoping for even more cameos, should MTV order a second season. "We're hoping that going forward, people who are weed-friendly and comedy-friendly will see the show, get excited about it and just want to come out and play," said Kaplan.

Snoop Dogg switched Gurls lyrics to avoid lawsuit
Rapper Snoop Dogg was forced to change his verse on Katy Perry's "California Gurls" after the Beach Boys threatened to sue for referencing their original "California Girls" anthem.
The ageing rockers released their summer smash in 1965 and Snoop Dogg decided to pay tribute to the band in a line on Perry's pop song, about wishing all the girls could be "California Girls".
But the Beach Boys objected to the lyric, citing copyright infringement, and served Perry's label bosses with a legal notice - prompting the hip-hop star to alter his verse, according to Rolling Stone magazine.
Ironically, Beach Boy Brian Wilson recently gave the singer's track his seal of approval after learning she wrote the 2010 summer hit as a tribute to his group's fun-loving surf pop.
He told the Los Angeles Times, "I love her vocal. She sounds very clear and energetic... The melody is infectious." Source: Ananova

Snoop Dogg and Diddy have cancelled joint concerts in the UK after Snoop Dogg was denied a visa.
A tour spokesman said the shows were cancelled after "credible behind the scenes efforts were made to no avail to reverse the decision".
The musicians were "incredibly disappointed and devastated", he added.
They had been due to perform in London on Wednesday, followed by Cardiff, Manchester, Glasgow and Nottingham. The tour resumes in Dublin on March 31.
In an interview with MTV in Amsterdam, Snoop Dogg complained: "They knew I was coming six, seven weeks ago, so they could have denied me access then.
